This piece presents an idealistic if not idealized scenario. It is an imagining of the "traditional nuclear American family" through a lens where monsters interact and love humans in total mutual acceptance and harmony. In this reality, the dome home is the norm and push mowers are good enough.

Find My Friends (Interchangeable Diptych: Position I), 2017

This is one position of an interchangeable diptych. In the first position, the subjects are unaware of each other but are searching for a friend as evident by the eponymous app’s symbol on each of their devices. Almost inadvertently, the subjects have attracted a crowd of others who are witnessing their search and are tuned-into the devices.

This is an interchangeable diptych in the second position where the narrative continues and the subjects have now happily discovered each other. This is my greatest hope for technology, that we can find each other in this world. Also in this position, the A-frame house in the background creates a kind of, “Eye of Providence”, a symbol often used in Christianity and Freemasonry with a pyramid topped with God’s all-seeing eye. In this version, God’s eye has been replaced with the wi-fi symbol with all that its widespread reach entails. Also, the two rabbits from the first position become one two-headed rabbit in the second position, two becoming one.

This painting takes its title from a Modest Mouse song about perseverance in the face of adversity. Last winter, I painted much of this current work in solitude in our cabin in the Catskills. It was during one of these lonely painting sessions that I listened in disbelief to the presidential election results on the radio. As the night unfolded, I felt extraordinarily alone in the woods and questioned my plans for isolation during that time. During the following weeks and then months, I found much comfort in others and immersed myself in political action big and small. I found a spark of hope in the dark woods and now cling to the idea that we can emerge from this place, not just intact, but stronger.
